Highwaymen Artists
Home >> Highwaymen Stories
Highwaymen artists or Florida Highwaymen, was a loosen association of African-American artists that painted Florida landscapes in 1950s through 1960s, and disbanded around 1970s. At that time, there was no way that works of unknown even though talented African-American would find their way to art galleries and shows. So, the Highwaymen artists were selling their paintings from their own truck travelling along East Florida. In 1990s, interest to the works of Highwaymen artists was sparkled again after a few articles in magazines and news paper. And in 2000, 26 Florida artists were official recognized as Highwaymen and later were included in the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. Of these 26 Highwaymen artists, only 9 are considered as original Highwaymen. Here is a full list of the Highwaymen artists; the nine of them (original Highwaymen) are highlighted.
